Q. I live in Indiana, an at-will state. I have done great work for my company for three years up until 3 months ago. I'm starting to get distracted, have been defensive with a few director level executives, and my sales numbers have been lower for a few months straight. What is the usual protocol for most corporations before they terminate you? I haven't had a written warning yet but what is the law? Would they have to give me a probationary, "shape up or get out" written warning?

A. There is no law for this, especially an at-will state. Most larger companies with put you on warning or probation, but they are not really required to. You need to make some decisions. What is keeping you from doing the good job you used to do? Either resolve these issues or start looking for a new job. It appears that you may need one, one way or the other.
