GNU Free Documentation License What happens to a device if you use a higher than required amperage on an AC adapter? Q. I have a device that requires an ac adapter with 800mA. I can't find the one that goes with it. I have one that says output 1.4A. I am wondering if I will damage the device by using it. The input and output volts are the same and I am not sure about the polarity. It's not a device that I particularly care about so I am tempted to just try it. Just don't want to blow up the house. It is not the amount of current that flows, given the same voltage.The amount of current the devices draws depends on the device itself. An adapter rated at 1.4 amps will safely provide 800mA. The device (properly working) will not draw beyond it's rated design. So it is safe. Polarity is a different matter, it is not negotiable. This will make or break (i.e. fry) the device.
