The term broadband can have different meanings in different contexts. The term's meaning has undergone substantial shifts.

In telecommunication

Broadband in telecommunications refers to a signaling method that includes or handles a relatively wide range (or band) of frequencies, which may be divided into channels or frequency bins. Broadband is always a relative term, understood according to its context. The wider the bandwidth, the greater the information-carrying capacity. In radio, for example, a very narrow-band signal will carry Morse code; a broader band will carry speech; a still broader band is required to carry music without losing the high audio frequencies required for realistic sound reproduction. A television antenna described as "normal" may be capable of receiving a certain range of channels; one described as "broadband" will receive more channels. In data communications an analogue modem will transmit a bandwidth of 56 kilobits per seconds (kbit/s) over a telephone line; over the same telephone line a bandwidth of several megabits per second can be handled by ADSL, which is described as broadband (relative to a modem over a telephone line, although much less than can be achieved over a fibre optic circuit).

Can one who lives in UK get broadband without a phone line?
Q. Currently with virgin media, I am planning to switch to a new account. I value speed very much since there is 6 people using computer in the house. Unfortunately, having no phone line in the house, we found not so many choices out there for us. Plz help me to find out which companies do broadband without phone line.

A. I presume you mean you want broadband to go with an existing phone line, not something mobile like 3, Vodafone, Orange or T-Mobile (none of which I'd recommend, due to cost). Try Think Broadband if you already have a phone line - they will point you in the direction of the cheapest, and tell you what other requirements there are.

What to Look For in a Wireless broadband Router?
Q. I am planning on buying a new wireless broadband router, but I don't know what to look for. What I want is a wide range of wireless connectivity, wireless printing(if the routers even do that) and reliability. Please tell me what I should be looking for to get what I want from a Router, or recommend one!

Whats the best cheap but good services broadband provider?
Q. Ok so we're paying around 20 quid a month for unlimited, 8Mb broadband with Orange. We need something cheap, and the download limit not to be too low, but apparently we've never reached above the download limit so we probably don't need Unlimited anymore. We have one computer, a Ps3 and sometimes a Wii that connect to the internet too. The computer is online frequently as is the Ps3. So who's the best broadband provider?
