What are the advantages of VOIP over a normal home telephone system?
Q. I haven't got much of an idea what I'm looking at, I need to buy a new phone for the house but I've seen some which are compatible with VOIP but are expensive, is it worth the extra money. Any advice on the whole system would be great. I currently have a BT line and service and Sky TV with broadband package. Most phone usage will be evenings and weekend.

A. You don't need a VoIP compatible phone to use VoIP. You can use a regular telephone that plugs into a VoIP router. Most VoIP companies either charge very little for the router, or offer it free when you sign up for a plan. One of the disadvantages of having a regular telephone plugged into a VoIP router is that it will be the only phone you can use. The fix for this is to get an expandable VoIP phone base. This is a VoIP phone with the router built in, and makes it possible for you to have multiple handsets throughout your home just like with a landline phone. This is why a VoIP compatible phone can be a bit costly. There is a way to beat the high price of a VoIP compatible phone though. I highly recommend Packet8 since I use them for… [cont.]

Do anybody know a voip soft-phone able to manage different voip numbers at the same time?
Q. I have few Voip geographical numbers (1 uk and 2 italian local numbers) and I wish to manage all of them without using 3 different soft-phones as I do now. Which software offers me the possibility to this? Apparently the premium version of X-Lite is able to do it but the free version gives me some connection problem so I don't dare to buy the premium one. Anybody can help me? Thanks a million!!!

A. no, sorry can not doe it, because each have a different SIP protocol...but, if you have an in/out number ( which is then premium) you could use GrandCentral to do it!!! I also use 5 different softfones for different countries!!!

How i do i trace someone who is calling by using voip raider software ?
Q. I suppose, many of you would have used voip raider software. How could you trace someone who is using voip raider software for phone calls ?
Asked by saleem - Thu Oct 23 07:47:42 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. They cannot easily be traced - by the average person. But, I expect if the authorities got involved, they can trace back to the exchange that terminates the calls. Then, they will find out the calls originated from VoIP Raider. Then they will contact VoIP Raider and have them trace which of their users made the calls. So, I think it is possible, if they want to put forth the effort.

How are Skype out and other VOIP calls routed?
Q. How does the call get from the public Internet onto the telephone network? Does Skype (and the other VOIP operators) own equipment in each country to provide the interface? Where is it situated, in each telephone exchange, or centrally? Mali, the question concerned calls that go from the internet to land phones.
Asked by sotires - Sat Jan 5 18:57:57 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments
A. I believe your assumption is correct. That seems to be the only real way to get onto the PSTN network. There probably has to be an Internet VoIP to PSTN gateway box situated at each local area exchange (or they rent one from the local exchange, the same as they rent the DID phone numbers and then re-market the numbers to users). This is probably why SkypeIN is not available in all countries or all area codes. I live in Canada and we cannot get SkypeIN number in Canada yet (I've asked them numerous times in past years). I have had one in USA though.

How fast does your internet connection need to be to use VOIP with min problems?
Q. I have DSL that 1.5mbs. Is that fast enought to use VOIP and not run into alot of problems. I know you would have to be worried about both your up and down speeds. I have heard some say VOIP works great while others say that the service drops their calls or that they have poor quality. I am thinking about using VOIP to add an additional phone line to my small business so that I can call out for free as well in the US. Can I rely of the service or should I stick with a traditional land line? Also does anyone know of a cheap landline long distance placn?

A. 256 kbps (not mbps, no such thing yet) will do it. Anything above that and you can use the computer on the Internet while on the VoIP phone and have no drop outs. My VoIP phone is as clear as my land line, even when talking to people in Europe (can talk to 17 countries over there free)

A. First of all...Remove VoIP 1.1. If possible, Install 'fring' software from www.fring.com If you wish to make voip calls. It works with amzing voice and voip quality. You will be able to make free calls to Skype and ICQ. Further, If U want to get more talks then enable your Fring account wish SIP service. Like Lowratevoip.com, Voipbuster, Voipstunt, Voipwise etc. They have cheapest call rates in Voip market. B T W, U can get call credit from it's Voip reseller e.g. www.talkways.net Let me know if there is anything I can guide you more. SG. If you want to

A. The phone output from your VoIP device should be able to handle more than one unit, just like a normal landline. But, just like a normal landline, there's only so many devices it can electrically drive. But two shouldn't be a problem.

If you disconnect all the telephone wires from where your regular phone wire from the phone company comes into your house/apt or whatever, and then connect a regular phone (RJ11) phone cord from any one of the jacks in the house to the cable modem, and then use a doubler (a thingy you can buy from any best buy circuit city radio shack etc) you can plug the cord from any of your phones into any of the jacks, and all the jacks will be connected to the modem. do not do this until you have disconnected the "Inside wiring" from the wire coming from the phone company . . otherwise the "ring voltage, which is about 90 volts, will FRY your modem . . a very bad deal. FWIW I use Vonage, in the same setup with relatively poor audio vs the old "landl [cont.]
