AbbreviationVOIP
From Wiktionary under the GNU Free Documentation License. Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a general term for a family of transmission technologies for delivery of voice communications over IP networks such as the Internet or other packet-switched networks. Other terms frequently encountered and synonymous with VoIP are IP telephony, Internet telephony, voice over broadband (VoBB), broadband telephony, and broadband phone. Internet telephony refers to communications services — voice, facsimile, and/or voice-messaging applications — that are transported via the Internet, rather than the public switched telephone network (PSTN). The basic steps involved in originating an Internet telephone call are conversion of the analog voice signal to digital format and compression/translation of the signal into Internet protocol (IP) packets for transmission over the Internet; the process is reversed at the receiving end. VoIP systems employ session control protocols to control the set-up and tear-down of calls as well as audio codecs which encode speech allowing transmission over an IP network as digital audio via an audio stream. Codec use is varied between different implementations of VoIP (and often a range of codecs are used); some implementations rely on narrowband and compressed speech, while others support high fidelity stereo codecs. If my Voip phone is bugged how can I destroy the bug and prevent it of happening again? Asked by robb10036 - Tue Aug 8 02:24:06 2006 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments A. Not likely it is bugged. The phone it's self you can look at and see if it has a bug (roaches??) on it, under it or in it. The service is pretty much "bug proof" unless you are on a wireless router. If so, then ANYONE with the equipment and the motivation, can LEGALLY listen in. They can not, however, repeat any portion of the conversation. There are laws regarding listening to cordless conversations and what you can do with the information, but the "air ways" are still free. There are also encryption methods that can be used to get better security on Voip services. Answered by Dusty - Tue Aug 8 02:39:49 2006 Is it possible to make voip calls through a mobile?

Something similar to VoIP was just launched with Rogers Wireless in Canada. It is called Home Calling Zone. Where your cell phone has unlimited nation-wide calling for $15/month and it uses the wifi network in your home. It will work on any wifi network around North America.
